Analysts will be more heavily involved in building up skills and experience in biotechnology. There are various projects analysts may undertake at HBC, broadly categorized as follows:

1. Speaker Series Initiative: Analysts under the Speaker Series liaise directly with experts in the field to plan and coordinate panels as well as educational or interactive events on pertinent topics in biotech.

2. Industry Projects: Analysts join a team of 4-5 students and one team leader. Over the course of the semester, they will work with a life sciences company or lab to help them with a project or problem that they need help solving. There are three main initiatives under Industry Projects.

   1. The Diligence Initiative: For people interested in capital allocation, and the financing of biotech ideas and projects. Analysts may conduct due diligence on behalf of venture capital funds’ biotechnology division, or assist their portfolio companies with further fundraising or financial restructuring efforts.

   2. The Innovation Initiative: For people interested in acquiring hands-on experience in a lab or in the field. Projects would entail helping a lab or company achieve some tangible outcome – building a device prototype, or gathering customer reviews and iterating on the company’s existing suite of products.

   3. The Case Initiative: For people interested in business strategy development for biotech companies. Analysts will undertake a consulting project for the semester, and help a particular biotech/healthcare company with in-depth research. Deliverables may involve market sizing, revenue optimization, and competitive landscaping.

Every team has a slightly different schedule, depending on members’ weekly availabilities, but here is what yours could look like in HBC:

On Monday, meet your team leader and fellow analysts to go over the week’s agenda.

If you are consulting for a medical device company under the Case Initiative, this may involve market sizing for device applications, patient segmentation, or go-to market strategy development.

If you are doing due diligence for a biotech venture capital fund under the Diligence Initiative, this might entail assessing probability of FDA approval, the competitive landscape for a particular drug or device, or the financial health and trajectory of a potential portfolio company.

If you are working alongside a start-up in the Innovation Initiative, this could include literature review, lead product indication, benchwork, customer data analysis, or marketing efforts to fundraise for the firm.

Work on individual responsibilities and collective tasks.

You may find yourself conducting a deep dive into scientific literature, scheduling and interviewing experts in the field, performing your own experiments, or digging into databases. Keep in conversation with your team mates, and never hesitate to discuss any difficulties that may arise throughout the week.

Meet your team’s client and present your week’s findings, receive feedback on your work, and field any questions you may have for the client.

Attend a Club Social – a Saturday brunch, book club breakfast, or Sunday movie night.

We take our work for clients seriously, but having fun in the Club is just as much a priority. We strive to have fortnightly socials to create ample opportunities for members to bond and strengthen meaningful connections with one another.
